Chemical and Surface Properties of Charcoal and Activated Carbon Prepared from Soybean Milk Residue

Abstract


Charcoals and activated carbons from soybean milk residue were studied to see theeffect of carbonization temperatures between 300oC and 800oC. The chemical and surfaceproperties, such as percent yield, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon, iodine number, functionalgroups and surface morpholography were investigated. It was found that the percent yieldand volatile matter of carbonized charcoals decreased as the carbonization temperaturesincreased from 300oC to 800oC. The fixed carbons of charcoals increased with an increase inthe carbonization temperatures from 300oC to 800oC. the ash contents of the charcoal wereconstant for carbonized temperature > 400oC. The iodine numbers of activated carbons werehigher than regular charcoals for all carbonization temperatures. The iodine numbers ofactivated carbons were the highest at 500oC, after that they decreased. The peak of phosphatefunctional groups found in activated carbon increased as carbonization temperaturesincreased. The porousnous of activated carbon decreased with carbonized temperatures> 600oC.
